Optical Scanning in Process of Product Development

Although use of alternative 3D Optical Scanning and other Advanced Engineering methods is possible at every stage of Product Development cycle, emergence of more correct products, keeping the product costs under control or decreasing the product costs, the fact that the product process is monitorable and improvable in a process continuing from concept design to production may be provided by using such processes productively.

Concept Design

In order to attain concept design, it is possible to benefit from sketch studies as well as physical objects. For this purpose, render outputs obtained from scanning data are used.

Industrial Design

Regarding both obtaining a new design setting off a product with its engineering optimization provided and used and designing a new product from scratch, 3D Optical Scanning is used in various forms. For instance, it is possible to access CAD data from clay or mud model at a scale of 1:1 or smaller scale with 3D Optical Scanning and Modeling. This data obtained may be used for development of the design. Similarly, setting off an existing product a new product may be designed.

In order to scale the physical objects, 3D Optical Scanning may be used in combination with the prototyping technology. Being the output of optical scanning, STL format is also used as the common extension of swift prototyping machines.


Optical Scanning process provides reference data for CAD software used for Reverse Engineering method to be able to be used. CAD data obtained as a result of Reverse Engineering study is used for realizing CFD, CAE, FEA and other engineering analyses.


The moulds and models used in shaping sheet iron and production of casting attain mostly their final form by being modified manually. STL data obtained with Optical Scanning may be used in direct CNC process. Besides, Optical Scanning is used for the purpose of formation of CAD models of elements such as fixture, apparatus, etc.

Quality Control

By using industrial purpose scanning systems and evaluation software, 3D control of components such as mould, product, fixture, etc. may be carried out in a swift and delicate way.
